HGV Driver Shortage Sees London Recycling Incinerated
A national shortage of HGV drivers has resulted in councils in Sutton, Merton and Croydon, all of which are part of the South London Waste Partnership, having to incinerate recycling waste collected from some blocks of flats.
A spokesperson for the Partnership explained that of all the possible action that could be taken, incineration has the least impact on its recycling rate, because a lot of the recycling collected from communal flats is contaminated, Resource reports.
The representative continued, saying that this measure is a temporary one and will help to minimise the impact on the collection service as a whole.
“Since June our recycling and refuse collection crews have been working hard to minimise disruption caused by a severe nationwide shortage of HGV drivers. Despite their best efforts, collections from some properties have been taking place later than scheduled,” they went on to say.

Whether you need help with a complete house clearance or just need to get rid of a few bits and bobs, we’ve got you covered. Our services include bulky waste collection, which we know can be problematic in London because space is limited outside homes and skips take up a lot of precious parking space.
